The plane was reportedly carrying more than 200 people and crashed in the Sinai peninsula.

A Russian passenger plane carrying more than 200 people crashed Saturday over Egypt’s Sinai peninsula, Egyptian authorities announced.

According to Reuters, the crash was confirmed in a statement from Egypt's prime minister. A cabinet level crisis committee had been formed to handle the crash, Reuters also reported.
The plane was an Airbus A-321, operated by Russian airline Kogalymavia, that had taken off from Sharm el-Sheikh, a resort on the Red Sea, the BBC reported. It reportedly was en route to St. Petersburg, Russia.
Most of the passengers were Russian tourists, according to the BBC.
The plane was carrying 217 passengers and seven crew members, AFP reported.
According to Airbus, the A 321 has a range of up to 3,000 nautical miles. It typically carries 185 passengers, but also can be configured to carrying 220 passengers in a high-density seating arrangement.
